Description
Stars Fell on Alabama is a 1934 Jazz standard that has become synonymous with the state being added to license plates in 2002. But it's a reference to an 18th century event that was retold in a book in 1934. It appears the book title influenced the music. The interesting thing is that I have old family letters from the 1930's that reference family members who remembered when the Stars Fell on Alabama, which was the 1833 Leonid meteor shower which was apparently seen quite spectacularly in Alabama, so much so that some people thought the world might be ending.
With that family connection to those events, I knew I had to do this piece of typographic map art which has a rustic modern style. The wooden background is of course quite rustic, appearing like weathered wood. While the silhouette of Alabama with the phrase upon it has the feel of copper with the patina of age upon it.
