Description
Even though the lines were long, there was no question that on my first trip to Boston, I had to tour the USS Constitution, AKA Old Ironsides.
We're talking about a piece of living history, a boat named by George Washington, and it was launched near the close of the 19th century. I've always enjoyed visiting historic places, but old homes and such tend to have achieved museum status. They're not out floating on the water. Of course, old Ironsides is something of a floating museum. It's still officially in commissioned duty, but it's main mission today is promoting an understanding of the US Navy and its history.
What I loved most about my visit to see the USS Constitution is that our guide and other sailors on board Old Ironsides were in period dress. I knew standing there that the resulting image would be pretty timeless! This really feels to me like an old portrait of a sailor rather than something contemporary. Don't you think?
