Description
The soaring architecture of the magnificent Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha, also known as the Alabaster Mosque, was simply unforgettable. It was clearly amongst the pinnacle of the Ottoman style built in the 19th century.
It was built on the grounds of the Citadel by Muhammad Ali Pasha, ruler of Egypt at the time, in memory of his late son. Clearly an amazing memorial for any one person. The exterior is grand, but the interior decor is where I think we really strike the chords of opulent or ornate. I can only imagine the number of artisans it took to create this amazing mosque.
The soaring columns and domes of the Alabaster Mosque were what most stuck with me. I suspect I must have spent most of my time inside looking up - perhaps with my jaw slightly agape! Isn't it grand?
