I've read more than once that Eilean Donan is one of the most photographed castles in Britain if not the world. And I've certainly seen my share of images of this beautiful and classic castle, but most of the ones I've seen were during daylight hours.

As luck would have it, in the winter, I arrived in a dark and rainy evening. So rainy in fact, that I photographed it quite literally pressed against a the outside of a stone column, the only shelter I could find from the light mist.

The resulting image, though, I love. In the dark inky black, Eilean Donan glowing from floodlights looks like a beacon in the darkness. It feels almost like a star. I named it "Shine Like It Does" because when I saw it glowing in the night it reminded me of a lyric from an INXS song (so now you know a little something about the music that influences me).

And while I would love to have time to try some of the classic daylight vistas of Eilean Donan, this would likely remain one of my favorites. I love the symbolism of the glowing star against the night, a beacon in the distance. And I likewise love that i persevered to capture this moment in adverse conditions.
