Sometimes it seems there's a reason our plans don't work out the way we expected. Several years ago I lucked into a long weekend in San Jose, California. On Saturday morning, I had planned to arrive in Big Basin Redwoods State Park in time to see the sun rise. Leaving long before the sun came up, it was still too late to make it all the way to the park.
I have no idea exactly where this is but seeing the sun starting to appear, I decided to pull off at a scenic overlook and see what the first rays of morning light would reveal.
The landscape that opened up before me in those morning mists was truly majestic. Northern California is still the scene that appears in my mind when the words "primeval forest" are spoken. There was just something majestic and wild about those rolling hills and the soft mists that ran into the valleys.
Later that morning, arriving in Big Basin it was quite apparent to me that dawn there would have been overpowered by the massive trees and the fog. My views on that scenic overlook on the way to the park were ultimately far better. And I still had my chance to walk amongst the giant redwoods. Beautiful vistas and amazing flora... it's a wonder I ever came back from California!
