I regret I never got to take a closer look, but the New Kingdom temple ruins in the heart of modern day Luxor looked quite picturesque bathed in golden late afternoon sunlight. There wasn't a lot of free time to wander in Luxor, and by that point in my travels through Egypt, I was experiencing ancient ruins overload. If you've ever visited medieval castles and cathedrals in Europe, you may know what I mean. After awhile no matter how unique and beautiful they are, they start to ruin together for some of us.
Such was the case as I stood virtually on the doorsteps of ancient Thebes. The ruins here in Luxor and at nearby Karnak are part of a UNESCO designated World Heritage site. As grand as those Egyptian temple ruins are even in a state of decay, imagine what Thebes must have looked like in its golden age? I've since read that they are even looking at rebuilding the avenue of Sphinxes that once connected the temple complex in Luxor with the one at Karnak. All the more reason t...
