It's funny how often we discover that the places nearest to us are the last ones we see. I grew up in Georgia and realized that I had barely seen our coast. It's now high on my list of places to explore in more detail, but so far, I've had one brief visit to Savannah and the beautiful coastal area that surrounds it.
This photo was taken on my first morning there. I had set out with the intention to get out to Tybee Island in time for the sunrise. Part way there, however, I realized that I wouldn't make it and more importantly that the gorgeous landscapes that lie in between Tybee Island and Savannah were more than worth stopping.
I spotted a turn-off for a nature trail near Battery Hamilton, the site of old Civil War fortifications and decided that this would be an excellent place to see the sun rise.
