Description
Several years ago, I spent a few days exploring the Savannah area. I expected to spend most of my time in the historic city, but I ended up spending more than a little time on and near Tybee Island. The scenic coastal landscapes were simply beautiful and captured my attention.
This digital painting is based on my photos of the salt marshes on McQueen's Island near Tybee. There's a trail there that follows an abandoned railroad line with a tiny, as far as I can tell un-named, creek between the trail and US 80. Based on the maps I've looked at the creek eventually makes its way to Bull River.
Whatever it's name, the morning view of that creek inspired this work. And it follows the pattern of the grasses there. The Salt marsh grasses are naturally variegated. Near fresh water, they are green but as the water turns salty, the grasses become yellow. Sort of a natural soil test for marsh water! I loved how the fresh water creeks and streams painted the landscape quite literally here.
