Description
I viisted Oaxaca, Mexico for two short days at the end of 2010. The festive period between Christmas and Kings Day (or the Epiphany) explains the massive pinata hanging over the intersection outside this beautiful colonial church.
The moment I saw that beautiful pinata and the rustic church, I knew I had to capture this moment of life in Mexico. For a moment, I wasn't thrilled about the market spread out across the plaza in front of the church, but it quickly passed. Sure, it would be great to concentrate on the architecture of the church, but I'm equally if not more happy to have this moment of life in Mexico captured. It gives a real sense of the rhythm of life in Oaxca, a city with UNESCO recognized architecture and at the same time everyday people living their lives, shopping at the markets that spring up in various squares around the city on set days of the week. Perhaps I'll get the chance to add another photo of this church concentrating on its Spanish colonial architecture another day! I hope!
At the time I took this photo, I had no information about the church. I just loved the rustic square lines mixed with the elaborate centerpiece above the door. When I got home, I did some research and discovered that this is the San Agustin Church and Convent founded in the 16th century. It was converted into a Casa de Cuna (orphanage) near the close of the 19th century and is still in use today.
