Description
The ruins of Tintagel Castle were in one of the most striking locations we visited on the Cornish coast. Perched above cliffs overlooking the sea, it was easy to imagine all the fantastical tales that we heard about the place!
The castle ruins are from a 13th century castle built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall. It has long been in ruins but became a tourist stop in the 19th century.
Aside from the beautiful location, at least some of the interest in Tintagel is that it is connected to the legends of King Arthur. Some tales place it as the location where the legendary king was conceived. There's also a cave nearby identified as Merlin's Cave.
It was those legends that were at the top of my mind when I worked on this piece featuring a section of the ruined castle walls. I wanted it to have the feel of being ripped from the pages of old fairy tales and legends, the likes of which seem to abound in Britain.
