When I lived in the suburbs north of Atlanta, the walking trails along Vickery Creek in Roswell, Georgia, were among my favorite haunts. I went there with my camera, but often I spent more time communing with nature.
It always amazed me how serene this area was because just beyond this little stretch of river, it was very much the city, filled with cars and people, but the area along Vickery Creek was preserved.
The waterfalls you see beneath the golden autumn trees are just one example of that preservation. Those falls are not natural but a man-made dam. This area was filled with old mill-works and the ruins of buildings that once made up the historic Roswell Mills. This dam once powered a small scale industrial enterprise in tiny Roswell, Georgia.
Now the mill is long gone, but in a neat way, that history has preserved a little sense of the natural setting that once existed in the midst of Atlanta's teeming metro area. I loved walking those trails to escape the...
