Description
There are some places we visit on our travels that are life-long dreams. For me, standing before the remains of the Roman Baths in Bath, England, fell into that category. I had seen them on TV as a child and they had captured my imagination. It floors me when you can stand before something built in antiquity thousands of years ago.
The waters of Bath, though, have a far longer story. The pools of water that bubbled forth here were already sacred to the Britons before the Romans ever arrived. The Romans, as they tended to do, rolled in the mythos of their own Gods with the local ones and the Baths were built.
What we see today when we visit Bath is partially Roman and partially Victorian. Pretty much everything above the level of the pool itself was built in Victorian times for tourists visiting the ancient wonder. While not original, it certainly adds to the atmosphere of standing before that emerald pool.
If you've stood there, never mind dreamed of visiting, you can probably identify with the feeling of standing there and gazing into antiquity, can't you?
Bath is an incredibly beautiful city in its own right, but I honestly would have journeyed there just to stand in the presence of this ancient artifact. And I'd do it again, no doubt in my mind.
