Description
The little village of Lacock today has a good tourist trade and is often used in period historical dramas (the ones for which the British are so well known). But it's no coincidence how often these well preserved little English villages have a history of a past rise and fall. In the case of Lacock the village prospered while the English wool trade was a success story. With it' sdecline, the prosperous village became a sleepy place. The outside world modernized and left little Lacock behind. And now today, it's become a well-preserved peek at the past, a curiosity.
And that past prosperity also explains how a little English village has such a grand medieval church! As beautiful and sleepy as the village was, I have to admit I was surprised when I rounded the corner and saw this beautiful church steeple reaching into the picturesque skies above Wiltshire! Wow!
There has been a church on this site in Lacock since at least the 11th century, but the beautiful church we see today dates from the 15th century. The rebuilding of the Church of St. Cyriac took place when the village was part of a booming trade.
This was my favorite vantage point on that beautiful late Medieval church. I love the welcome sign by the gate and the little cobblestone path leading to the open church doors. It feels so timeless, a look at life in Lacock that could be today or hundreds of years ago.
