Description
If you've ever been to Merida, you know the Paseo de Montejo. It's a beautiful wide avenue that was meant to mimic the Champs-Elysee in Paris. Built in the 19th century, it's a world apart from the nearby city center which is crisscrossed with one way narrow streets.
The Paseo de Montejo was lined with mansions and homes of the wealthy like the Palacio Canton built in the early 20th century for General Francisco Canton Rosado. Today many of those massive homes are businesses and some are wistful memories of the grandeur they once possessed. But this one, Palacio Canton, is a beautifully preserved Beaux Arts gem. And it's preserved because it now houses the Regional Museum of the Yucatan.
Now, you may be thinking, this grand, but it's not all that big. This is a side view of the palacio! I never did get around to taking a photo of the massive side that faces the Paseo de Montejo. And honestly, I liked the side view best. Still beautiful but not quite so out of scale to my eyes. Still, it's amazing when the side yard looks like the front yard of a small mansion isn't it?
