Description
There's just something magical about a wooden pier reaching into the sea. I'm not sure I have an explanation for why we find these as the subject of so many images except that it works. It provides a beautiful leading line or connecting point from the foreground out into the picture, no question, but I think it's beautiful on some level beyond a simple rule of photography and visual art.
Maybe it's because we like to connect with the sea? We build piers and docks to connect us with our primordial seas? I'm not sure, but I know as soon as I stumble upon a pier, I stand there and gaze off into the water whether I have a camera on me or not. And this particular pier on the beach in Playa del Carmen, I watched over the course of days. As I was there for awhile, I had the luxury of trying to pick the best moment to capture it. And this is one of my favorites no doubt.
This picture followed days of storms at Playa del Carmen. the remnants of that storm are still evidence on the horizon, but the beautiful light in the foreground is such a great contrast to those dark skies. The Caribbean waters have such a beautiful color to them, and the wooden pier has a warm golden glow about it as well. Ah, there's nothing quite like natural light from the sun! The colors, the intensity from that sunlight. The reason I love waiting for the right light. When it's right, the difference is palpable.
I love the peaceful solitude of this moment, just an empty pier, calm beautiful Caribbean seas and a handful of birds. Sigh...
