Description
One of the high points on my visit to Cairo was the opportunity to visit the fabulous Alabaster Mosque at the Citadel. This 19th century mosque was built in an over-the-top style of Ottoman architecture in memory of the late son of Muhammad Ali Pasha. It's an incredibly beautiful memorial, and as you can tell by the architecture, it has a really exotic middle eastern flavor to it.
The lighting of the mosque particularly caught my attention. It was as if someone had intended to use the chandeliers to replicate the stars against the night sky? Perhaps they did?
This historic mosque fell into that category of things I didn't have in mind when I planned to travel to Egypt but which made a strong impression on me. It's certainly some amazing architecture isn't it? Imagine all the skilled artisans who it took to construct and decorate the Alabaster Mosque.
