Description
On my return to Edinburgh from my Scottish Highlands trip, I was literally exhausted and was trying to develop a cold. It was one of those moments that I was both elated because the Highlands were gorgeous, but I was also tired and happy to have a room to myself and a big bed in which to collapse. And that was precisely what I did.
Hours later, I woke up, it was well into night and I had my first night view of Edinburgh from my hotel room. As you can tell, that view was really something! A deep winter fog had descended on Edinburgh and my view of historic Calton Hill was really something. I loved the truly atmospheric mix of fog and lights, particularly on this old castellated structure. The 19th century architecture was made to look like a castle but is in fact the Governor's House, the only part of the old Calton Gaol to survive demolition in the mid 20th century. To the right, out of direct view is the Old Calton Burial ground. Knowing that makes the foggy mist feel all the more mysterious I think!
I may not have felt so hot when I woke up, but that would hardly stop me from pulling out the camera and tripod to capture a night exposure of that incredible view of Calton Hill that night. Truly this fits the category of ethereal I think.
