Description
My last night in Dublin included one last stroll along the quays of the River Liffey. I had haunted this area often during my stay in Dublin. I loved the feel of the buildings that faced the river. It just had a classic European quality to it, and the Ha'Penny Bridge definitely fits that mold.
Opened in 1816, this classic cast iron bridge, officially the Liffey Bridge, speaks to a by-gone era, doesn't it? It's the oldest cast iron bridge in Ireland and when it was opened it was a toll bridge for pedestrians crossing the river between north and south Dublin. If you guessed the toll was a half penny, you get a gold star. The toll hasn't bee charged for nearly a hundred years, but the unofficial name of this landmark bridge has stuck with it every since.
My last stroll by the Ha'Penny Bridge was on a beautiful night. That whole last day in Ireland was uncommonly pretty weather in fact! This is the view from Wellington Quay looking towards the north side of that beautiful old Irish city.
