Description
On the shores of Galway Bay stands Dunguaire Castle, a medieval tower house built in the early 16th century. Dun is the Gaelic Irish word for fort. Thus, Dun Guaire gets its name from the fort of King Guaire, the legendary king of Connacht. The Tower house was built by the O'Hynes clan in 1524 and once was home to Richard Martyn, Mayor of Galway. In fact, it was in the Martyn family for much of its history.
Regardless of etymology or history, it's a gorgeous piece of old architecture perched in a beautiful spot on the water. No doubt the location was chosen for its easy defense, but today it's simply picturesque.
The old castle house was partially restored in the early 20th century and is used for banquets and events.
