Description
On one of my last days in Scotland, I was looking for things to see that were near Edinburgh and read about North Berwick. The chance to walk on the seaside sounded great but I also wanted to get one last chance at an old world castle and the ruins of Tantallon were nearby.
I don't know about other visitors to European ruins, but I have the mutant ability to pick the ones that are under restoration. That should really read, covered in scaffolding. It was a fun visit but not incredibly photogenic!
There was, however, one building on the grounds of Tantallon castle that was not hidden beneath scaffolds and that was this old lectern style dovecot. Visiting it provided one of those peeks into an out of reach way of life, when pigeons and doves were kept for food. It's a bit hard to imagine today but in the 18th century when this was built, having a dovecot was something of a status symbol!
My time at Tantallon was also marked by a deep cloud cover but I managed to luck up while visiting the dovecot and got one good burst of sunlight to illuminate the beautiful rolling greens around it. It made for a suitably dramatic picture of a beautiful piece of old world architecture.
