Description
We're all guilty some time of not reading beneath the surface. I saw this beautifully designed Celtic Cross on Anchor Green in North Berwick several years ago and I loved the mood of the scene. I love the intricate designs and the wispy clouds of the sky behind it. It was the scene I fell in love with, but I never read the inscription on that cross. It was adjacent to the site of an old church, a stopping point for pilgrims of long ago heading to Saint Andrews. I assumed the two were somehow connected.
Flash forward several years and someone asked me for details about the old cross in this picture and I started trying to hunt down the story. It turns out that it's a beautiful memorial to Catherine Watson, a young woman from Glasgow, who died saving the life of a drowning boy in 1889 right there in North Berwick.
The long-ago story behind that beautiful Celtic Cross sure adds another dimension to this scene, doesn't it?
