Description
The streets of Granada seemed almost timeless. Were it not for the ever-present power lines one sees crisscrossing the streets of Latin America, it could have almost been potluck what century it was.
The funny thing is from what I read it seems like practically all of the major buildings of the city have been rebuilt many times over. If not from earthquakes, they were damaged in one conflict or another. It almost made Granada feel like the proverbial Phoenix, rising from the ashes again and again.
One would hardly believe this old baroque church was anything but centuries old. And actually from what I could gather, most of it is centuries old. The beautiful facade is the Spanish Colonial church as it was in the 18th century when it was built. But the majestic bell tower of Iglesia la Merced was rebuilt later. And it certainly does have a golden, almost shiny new look, in the late afternoon sun of Central America doesn't it?
Aside from the architecture and history, this is very much the epitome of the neighborhoods I've wandered in Latin America. An old church is so often at the heart of every little barrio or neighborhood. I wonder if the residents of the neighborhood around Iglesia La Merced know their own churches bells distinctly from the rest? Certainly that massive tower must guide them home if nothing else!
