I've had the pleasure of two visits to the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, and it's definitely on my list of favorite UNESCO World Heritage Sites. And between my two visits there, it was also recognized as a modern wonder of the world.
I certainly understand why. These ancient Mayan ruins are quite impressive, and despite the abundant material remains of their civilization, they are still a mysterious group. Unlike some of the other indigenous groups in North America, their civilization was already in collapse before Europeans arrived. The modern Maya were already living outside most of the great cities of their ancestors.
That mysterious nature of the Maya was on my mind as I crafted this piece representing El Castillo, the most recognizable structure at Chichen Itza, the main pyramid one sees entering the ancient site.
