Description
I've read that the Ancient Pantheon in the historic centre of Rome is one of the oldest structures in the world that's still in use. It no longer honors the ancienct Roman Pantheon of gods, but it is officially the Church of St. Mary and the Martyrs, a Roman Catholic church. This was the second Pantheon, constructed during the rule of Emperor Hadrian in the second century.
This picture is based on my first sighting of that ancient building. The narrow alleys and streets of Rome allow for some of its most amazing buildings to literally surprise you. Until I entered the Piazza della Rotonda, I hadn't gotten so much of a glimpse of this ancient temple, and then there it was looming against the dark winter sky and surrounded by a veritable sea of umbrellas.
Cold and damp, the sensation of awe was still strong. Perhaps if you grow up with such ancient buildings in your backyard it's possible to be jaded? But for me at least, moments like this stick with you forever.
I certainly find it hard to imagine forgetting my first sighting of that ancient wonder of Rome. How about you?
