Description
On my second visit to Merida, my trip happened to coincide with the re-lighting of the old cathedral on my first night there. I wasn't sure I'd get an actual image to share, though, as the first night there were stages and seating close to the cathedral. I didn't get the entire story, but apparently the new exterior illumination was the culmination of some renovations of the centuries old Catedral de San Ildefonso in Merida.
In fact, the cathedral in Merida is reported to be one of the oldest in the Americas. It was completed in 1598! It's architecture as a result of its age is more Moorish than anything. Where most of the Spanish Colonial churches one encounters in Mexico and Latin America tend to be baroque. At night the new illumination really shows off the blocky lines of its bell towers, doesn't it?
On my second and last night there I managed to capture a photo of this glowing dusk moment before catching up with friends for dinner. Not only did the cathedral look stunning at dusk, it reignited a desire to spend more time in Merida, that jewel of the Yucatan.
