Description
This beautiful old school building is currently the Andalusia City Hall, but when my mother was growing up in this corner of Covington County, this was East Three Notch Elementary School. Some of my earliest memories are from the playground that used to be behind this school when we visited my grandmother who lived a block from there on an adjacent street.
But aside from the family history, one of the reasons this old school has always fascinated me is that I went to Elementary school in an almost identical building in a neighboring state. And since then I've come across several clearly built form the same Collegiate Gothic plan books in the early 20th century.
Andalusia's old elementary school was built in 1914 and was a school for 87 years before being renovated to serve as the city hall. And since the elementary school I attended is now gone, that makes this one in Andalusia a beautiful reminder of my own childhood. Perhaps you may have also attended school in one of the other old school buildings on this same plan?
The photos this is based on were taken when my Mom and I visited for homecoming for Andalusia High School several years ago. That explains the massive letter A in the courtyard before the city hall.
