Description
Had I more time to explore Palenque (maybe next time), I have no doubt I would have discovered even more architectural features that struck my fancy, but the first thing I spotted entering the site was the ruins of the Palacio. In particular the tower seen here caught my eyes. Some people believe it may have been a Mayan observatory. And certainly the Maya were well acquainted with the movements of the heavens. Others believe it's a watch tower of some description. What struck me the most about this tower was having not seen one at the previous Mayan sites I'd seen and that it had something of an Asian vibe to it, don't you think? Curious how often architectural styles are recreated across the world, much like the Mayan pyramids themselves.
I've read that the first modern explorers to set foot in Palenque spent the night in these very ruins. Kind of a neat connection to make between then and now. Although clearly, my explorations are tame compared to the first people to take stock of the ruins at Palenque! How marvelous that must have been!
