Description
Tower Bridge is without a doubt one of the most iconic sights in London. It's such a big landmark that it's often misidentified as London Bridge which although a more famous name is a far less interesting bridge (the famous version of that bridge was from Medieval times).
By contrast, Tower Bridge is a product of Victorian London. When it was to be built near the Tower of London, the Victorians wanted a bridge that would complement the tower rather than clash with it. In the end, I believe the massive bridge actually overshadows the tower that inspired it. Not surprising considering the hundreds of years of engineering that separate the two structures in time.
I can't tell you how long I stood there staring at and photographing the bridge on this particular afternoon. The combination of skies and light was incredible. I had dark clouds to the north while there was still strong afternoon sunlight come in from the southwest. The golden light and dark skies really makes for a dramatic picture doesn't it?
