Description
The streets of Oaxaca were quieter than usual on New Years Day when I visited, but this was my impression of the city after a high-spirited New Years Eve. In the city center, some restaurants and shops were open, but walking just a little bit away from there, you encountered shuttered shop doors like this one.
Still when I looked at it, I couldn't help thinking how representative of Mexico and Latin America this corner was, or at least of the historic parts of those old cities. Shops and homes are often combined. It wasn't uncommon in some cities that when I went in a shop, the owner would come to wait one me from an adjacent living room.
Whether the shop keep here lived upstairs or not, you can tell that's the way this old building was constructed. I also love how all the best architectural details went to the upstairs residence while the lower shops are fairly nondescript. Look at that balcony and the hefty column on the corner and those massive colonial era doors. Such old but simple beauty in that architecture.
And even though it was in Oaxaca de Juarez that I stumbled upon this street scene, it really does remind me of much of my travels in Mexico. A quaint street scene that could be most anywhere south of the border. So charming and it calls me back...
