Description
I was walking along the banks of the Seine one afternoon during my short stay in Paris when I glanced across a bridge, the Pont Neuf and saw this beautiful street scene. And in particular, that beautiful old art deco building bathed in sunlight. I had no idea about any of the history, I just thought the street-scape before me was the epitome of Parisian.
I later found out that old building, La Samaritaine, was an historic Paris department store. It was in business for over a century when it finally closed its doors back in 2005. I believe the last I read they are still planning to re-use the building in some way which is great because it would be a shame to let go of such a beautiful piece of the city's architecture and history.
Beyond that, what I love most about this picture is the sense of transition from the foreground where the observer is to the distant buildings. In the foreground, everything on the bridge, one of the oldest in Paris, is in cool shadows, but in the distance, that great warm golden light.
The promised land?
