Description
I traveled to the wilds of Connemara because I had seen so much of the beautiful landscapes of Ireland from the window of a bus and I wanted to see some of it on my own two feet before I left Ireland. When I discovered that there was a hostel open even in winter just above Killary Harbour near the village of Leenane, I knew I had to go spend a couple of nights here.
Killary is a deep natural harbor, but some of the local tourism effort has gone towards suggesting that it is in fact the only fjord in Ireland. Whatever your inclination, deep harbor or fjord, it's a pretty amazing sight isn't it?
My first afternoon here, the sun was truly in full force and I slipped and slid down a mud path to the shores to take it all in properly. And I'm so glad I did. Not again during my stay was the light this powerful or the skies quite so picturesque.
Not that my stay in Connemara wasn't everything I expected. The next couple of days passed as many did in winter. One minute stormy, the next the sun showed itself gloriously. And I loved every minute of it. But this golden moment on the shores of Killary Harbour were my one chance to capture a moment of such raw natural beauty.
For orientation's sake, this photo was taken from County Galway. The opposite shore is County Mayo, both a part of the western area of Ireland known as Connemara.
