I was amazed at how beautiful the landscapes around Ireland were in the dead of winter when I visited. Much of it was seen from bus windows as I traveled around, but it was Connemara where I got to put the country roads of Ireland under my feet. I probably shouldn't have been surprised, but much of the landscape in this area reminded me of earlier visits to Scotland. There's that same wild and wide open feeling to the land in winter. Rolling hills, colorful scrub grasses and brush, and if one looks carefully, the same sheep freely grazing.
There seems to be some contention as to whether the body of water in this landscape is Ireland's only fjord or simply an estuary that makes for a great natural harbor. The tourism marketing types seem to bill this as Killary Fjord, Ireland's only fjord. But I heard it more commonly referred to while I was there as Killary Harbour. Take your pick, either way, the natural beauty of this place is amazing, isn't it?
