Description
When I look back on my short stop at Ross Errilly Friary in the countryside of County Galway near Roscommon, it feels very magical. There was something hauntingly beautiful alone about the landscape there. These church ruins sat in the midst of a farmer's fields, occupied sparsely by sheep grazing. And there was such a silence there, just the occasional bleating of a sheep or fluttering birds. It felt so removed from the world of today. One could almost imagine the roof back on that old monastery, almost imagine it as a center of life in the dark ages once more...
Ross Errilly Friary (or Mainistir Ros Oirialaigh in Irish Gaelic) is designated a National Monument of the Republic of Ireland. It's recognized as a valuable piece of Irish heritage.
I'd love to revisit this place again some day on a longer time table, but I couldn't be happier that I had such beautiful light for my brief stop there. This work is based on that beautiful morning.
