Description
Unless you're able to swing a stay near Abu Simbel, your visit to this ancient temple to Ramses II will be like mine, crowded! The winter light bathing the temple so early in the morning was fantastic, but so were the lines to visit this ancient site.
The photo this piece is based on shows a long line of tourists backed up from the entrance to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. And it was that way until time for the bus convoy to return to Aswan. In a way, this illustrates the power of this long ago king. Most people of his day are gone and forgotten, but he was able to make such an impression on his world that we still visit shrines to his legacy thousands of years later. Amazing isn't it! Do you think even old Ramses had any idea that he'd be remembered this long?
I went for an illustrative feeling in this piece, concentrating the details on the amazing larger than life Colossi of Ramses and leaving the hoards of tourists indistinct, a testament to the long-lasting memory of a long dead pharaoh.
