Description
I had heard from friends how beautiful Quebec City was. In fact, I had seen photos from their trips and a handful of photos online before I sat down to book a winter trip to Canada. I was incredibly unprepared for just how cold it was. Light years beyond the cold I've experienced on winter trips to Europe where it always seemed to hover right around freezing, not far below it.
But it was worth it for the chance to see so much snow and ice. I arrived after dark, and when I walked down the hill to see what there was to see, this was the first truly memorable sight I saw, a public ice skating rink in the heart of the city. I was immediately dazzled by the festive colored lights shining across the skaters. It's no joke that this scene was to me a postcard of winter made real. This was the very epitome of winter in my mind, not the fairly mild winters of my part of the country, but one full of snow and festive lights. I guess that is to say it was very Norman Rockwellian in nature.
The moment I stood there snapping photos of the skaters enjoying a winter evening, I knew I was going to create a piece of photo-based textured artwork based on this gorgeous night scene. It's sort of a circular thought, but what I was seeing was fantasy made real, and I returned it to the fantasies from whence it came when I created this piece.
