Artist's Description

No matter the hour, it seemed things never entirely closed down in Merida. It's entirely possible I simply didn't stay up late enough, but the pattern of days in the Yucatan city were much different than those to which I'm accustomed. In the afternoon, many of the local shops and stores closed. You'd often only find a handful of local establishments open. Whether or not everyone went home for a siesta, I couldn't say, but they certainly weren't on the streets. Then in the evening, the weather cooled a bit and life came back to the streets. I think it was this afternoon break that pushed the night hours back a bit.

The photo this was based upon was taken standing on a street corner in the Zocalo before heading back to the hotel on my last night in Merida. The streets weren't packed but they were far from dead.
