Description
I'd seen Tybee Island's well known lighthouse many times on TV over the years, but there's nothing quite like standing before that beautiful old lighthouse. If you've stood there while vacationing on Tybee Island or in nearby Savannah, no doubt you understand!
There's been a lighthouse on Tybee almost as long as there's been a Georgia. The first light was begun in 1733 on the order of James Edward Oglethorpe, the man who founded Savannah, Georgia's first English city. The light has been rebuilt several times over since that first light, but Tybee Light Station is still an old structure. It was last rebuilt following the US Civil War, and the lower portion is older still, being re-used.
When creating this textured photo art, I wanted to emphasize the height of the light rising into the skies over coastal Georgia. Truly iconic!
