Description
On my first afternoon in Merida I had already discovered one of the city's historic buildings. The center of the block is the Casa de Montejo, a true piece of Mexico's Spanish colonial heritage. It was built in 1549 for Francisco de Montejo, one of the city fathers. It remained a home to the Montejo family all the way into 1970's. Imagine that! Today it's a bank, but at least the historic fabric has been retained.
Of my multiple photos of the Montejo House, this was my favorite, the very first one I took. I loved the warm light from the sun setting out of frame and the people captured going about their lives on the streets of Merida, the capital city of the Yucatan state. Everyone appears so small next to the grandiose colonial architecture, don't they?
Just looking at that golden light on my first day in Merida makes me itchy to go back again. What a beautiful city!
