Description
Seeing the ruins of Pompeii had long been on my list o things to see. There's just something incredibly unreal about the place, a Roman town encased in amber. Or in the case of Pompeii ash. Buried by a violent eruption in AD 79, the city is an amazing first hand look into an ancient city. Rarely do we get to walk the same streets of a civilization that passed so long ago.
The scene here is a street in ancient Pompeii that runs next to the Temple of Jupiter (the base of which is on the left). In the arch ahead one can just make out the base of Vesuvius. I have to say it's unreal to me how many people today still live at the base of a volcano with such notoriety!
The end of Pompeii was so sudden, the streets so well preserved centuries later that one can almost picture the ancient Roman citizens going about their day right here not so unlike us today.
Pompeii - truly haunting and beautiful at once...
