Description
Granada's beautiful cathedral has stuck in my mind long after visiting that colorful colonial city in the heart of Nicaragua. I think in a lot of ways that bright yellow church has struck precisely because it's unusual.
Latin America, particularly its colonial cities, is known for baroque churches. In most of the cities, it's the norm to stumble over one little baroque beauty after the next.
But Granada's cathedral, from what I read, has been rebuilt several times over the years for a variety of reasons. The latest at around a century old was something of a mish-mash of architectural styles but owing mostly the Neoclassical.
What I loved most was the crisp gold and white and how all of the lines of the church seemed to point heavenward. A beautiful statement in architecture and color don't you think?
