Description
There's no question that the streets of Oaxaca de Juarez are gorgeous. As soon as I arrived in the city, I wished that I would be there longer. And as soon as I left, I longed to go back some day. That desire has not lessened in the years since. The historic city center is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site because of its beautifully preserved colonial architecture, some of which you can see in the foreground.
But Oaxaca's beautiful architecture didn't end there. The beautiful domed tower you see is exhibit A for the beauty of this old city. When I saw the dome of the Teatro Macedonio Alcala poking above the city's skyline, I had to find it. And I spent much of the day crisscrossing my path to come back here again to see what the old theater might look like as the direction of the light changed the scene around it.
This particular moment came late in the day. The late afternoon sun was creating a great warm glow around the old Belle Epoque style theater. This Oaxaca landmark was built in the early 20th century in a definitely French style, but it has been lovingly restored in recent years. Isn't civic pride a wonderful thing?
