Description
If and when I visit Egypt again, the ancient ruins of Karnak are high on my list of places to which I'd like a return visit. The light when we visited on our last morning in Luxor was great, but it would take far more than a short visit in the morning to explore this ancient Egyptian site in any detail.
The Temple Complex of Karnak that we see today was once part of ancient Thebes. It was part of the landscape of Egypt from the Middle Kingdom through Ptolemaic times, but the bulk of the buildings we see amongst the ruins today represent New Kingdom architecture.
Karnak was the last of the ancient temples I saw during my too brief time in Egypt, but I was also very much on temple overload at that point. There's an amazing amount of ancient history dotting the landscape of modern day Egypt. A brief visit of sites like Karnak would likely blow the mind of most armchair archaeologists. I know my brain still boggles at it, but I want to roam between those ancient walls again some day and breath the history of Egypt at least once more. The ghosts of Egypt call me back I think?
Note: Unsurprisingly the Temple Complex at Karnak along with nearby Luxor are part of a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.
