Stepping onto the Paseo de Montejo in Merida is like stepping into another city. Where the historic core is marked by narrow one way streets, the Paseo is a wide boulevard. It's over referred to as Merida's Champs-Elysees, and it was certainly inspired by the wide avenues of Europe.

The architecture that lines the Paseo de Montejo is also unlike the Colonial homes in the city center. Many of them are massive old mansions that have since passed onto other uses such as businesses or museums. But every now and then you encounter a little house with grand ambitions. I could never decide if this was a little house or a guest house of a neighboring manse. Either way, I loved it's style. There's hardly any yellow stucco for all the windows, doors, and over-the-top trim work. Just check out the elaborate frieze and the faux columns.
