Description
The 1868 lighthouse depicted on Sapelo Island was not the first or even the last to stand on the southern tip of the barrier island. The 19th century lighthouse was actually out of service for close to a century. It was damaged in a hurricane in 1898. The brick lighthouse sat in ruins for decades to come while a portable metal lighthouse stood nearby. That light was eventually relocated to Michigan. In the 1890's the state of Georgia undertook restoration of the historic lighthouse, returning it to its original appearance including the original daymarker.
The beautiful old lighthouse is a landmark but not technically in service today. It is lit however. It's among the oldest brick lighthouses still standing and was built by Winslow Lewis. It was once an important navigational point for entry to the port at Darien, Georgia.
