Description
The first time I saw the coastal marshes between Savannah and Tybee Island on the Georgia coast, I was driving through them in the dark. I had no idea there was really anything out there but a vast emptiness. The next morning, I was back there, with my camera and the intention to capture that golden light that comes with a new day. And I was literally floored by the marshes near one of Georgia's best known barrier islands.
And while the landscape is impressive and feels endless, it was the incredible microcosm of life that most attracted me. As I stood on a dirt road to take this panorama, I was incredibly aware of the rhythm of life. There was a multitude of creatures from tiny bugs to birds all around me. I've read that the marshes between the mainland and the barrier islands on the coast are akin to the lungs of a living creature, and I still don't have a firm understanding of what that means, but it's an interesting image. I believe I also read that the coloring of the various grasses was connected to how much salt was in the murky waters where they grow.
I took literally a ton of photos of the marshes, losing much of the time I had intended to spend in Savannah or out on Tybee, but I don't feel I lost a thing. It was very awe inspiring to stand there. And that was also why I put together this panorama of that vast expanse of gold and green landscape. I had to take in as much as I could in one image. And it remains one of my personal favorites from my time exploring the coast near Savannah, Georgia.
