Description
There's just something about this street scene form Oaxaca that always brings a smile to my face. I think it's the feeling of capturing a very local scene. There aren't hordes of tourists in the scene taking their own photos. It feels very much like a happy afternoon in any city filled with people enjoying the day.
In this particular case, the day was January 1st, so a lot of those people are enjoying not only the beginning of a new year but the festive period following Christmas.
Beyond that of course is the context. As fun as the scene is, look how beautiful the architecture is! The historic city center of Oaxaca is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site due to all of that old and well preserved architecture. Love the rough green cantera stone of the building on the right. Oaxaca is known for that type of stone vs the really classical but still old world architecture on the left. Even the colorful buildings in the distance don't 100% convince me I didn't stumble down some European street by accident. But that's Mexico, it's not just brightly colored stucco! There's so much depth to be found in this beautiful country!
