Description
The Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha in Cairo, Egypt, was one of the most beautiful buildings I've had the good fortune to visit. I had long been attracted to images of Ottoman architecture, but the Alabaster Mosque's interior was staggeringly beautiful and from what I've read is representative of the pinnacle of that period and style of architecture.
What was amazing to me was how open the space was, and while the wide angle lens that was used in this lightly textured photo does exaggerate it a bit, ti really was an incredible space to stand in. It had what I could only describe as an uplifting effect on me to stand there.
So it's with some irony that this photo is taken literally on the floor. It was the only way I could find to get a steady image that covered as much of that gorgeous multiple-domed-ceiling. Isn't that ceiling and the elaborate lighting the picture of opulence?
