Description
The ancient and incredibly well-known site of Stonehenge on the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire was one of the very first places I saw on my travels. I was only in Britain a short time that trip and stood before those ancient standing stones one morning. I'm still surprised to hear that many people are underwhelmed when they see them. I think ancient sites like this have be be put in historical perspective. They built this spiritual site with brute force and human ingenuity. They lacked any of the tools we'd use today. Yet they built a structure that has stood for thousands of years.
And it mystifies us even today. There are some great theories coming out about the purpose and meaning of Stonehenge, but ultimately can we ever get into the minds of a people and culture long gone? We can get glimmers of the meaning, but I'm not sure we'll ever have a firm grasp of the meaning of Stonehenge to them.
I've since visited Stonehenge again, although not on as beautiful a day as that first visit. Thinking about that first trip years ago, I was inspired to take a photo-art approach with one of my pictures of Stonehenge from that first trip. The result is a somewhat painterly and ethereal view of this UNESCO designated World Heritage Site. It's definitely the Stonehenge that lives in my heart.
