Description
Sometimes art can be about documenting new experiences, which doesn't always mean going somewhere foreign or exotic. Sometimes, the simplest pleasures are in our own backyards.
One such experience was my first exposure to sorghum several years ago. I don't know if it wasn't a crop grown in rural Georgia when I was growing up or if I'd been painfully unobservant as a child, but one afternoon as I was hunting for a place to watch the sunset, I stumbled over fields of an indescribable color. The fields of grain seemed to have an an almost rust-red hue floating above them in the stunning afternoon sunlight. I was instantly mesmerized!
When I got out of the car to try to capture the scene I'd seen from inside, the light wasn't quite the same - the sorghum was taller when I was standing on the roadside, and it hit me that I had to get up higher to get the same effect of the afternoon sun. Up to the top of my SUV I went - wish I had an open truck bed instead! And there was that light I'd seen, the shimmering rust hue across the tops of the field of grain vanishing into the distance...
And then I had to go home to find out what this beautiful and, to me, exotic, pant was. Simple old sorghum - go figure! Beauty is truly everywhere if we open our eyes to it.
