Description
I discovered Atlanta had its own Flatiron Building by accident one day after admiring a picture of the much more famous one in New York City and researching its history. It was then I discovered that in the heart of old downtown, Atlanta had a Flatiron Building, the English-American Building, that was actually just a bit older.
Atlanta's slightly older and shorter twin was built in the waning years of the 19th century by architect Bradford Gilbert. It was Atlanta's second skyscraper, but it's now the oldest surviving skyscraper in the city. As you can tell its height has been surpassed many times over since then.
There are apparently actually a number of buildings built on that same wedge shaped plan in the Neoclassical style of architecture. I've since seen the one in NYC in person as well as one in Asheville, NC.
Considering how much Atlanta has grown even in my lifetime, I'm glad that a little piece of old downtown is still standing on a little wedge of land on Peachtree Street near near Auburn and Luckie streets.
